What this site is
Count Words (Count-Words.com) is an online word counter for writers, students, editors and marketers. Paste or type text to see words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and keyword frequency update as you type, or open a document to count it without retyping.
Everything is free to use and there is no account to create.

How we work
- Private by design. Text and files are analysed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. Details are in the privacy policy.
- Documented counting rules. The methodology page explains exactly what counts as a word, a character and a sentence, including the cases where our result can differ from other tools.
- Sourced figures. Reading speeds, words per page and platform character limits are kept in one place, linked to their sources and re-checked. They were last verified on .
- Several languages. The main tools are available in English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, Русский, العربية, and counting works for text in any script, with the limits noted in the methodology.
