The preview cuts the title at about 600 px and the description at about 920 px. Google may show a different title or snippet, and its fonts and layout change from time to time, so treat this as a guide.

How this measures

Characters are Unicode characters, with line breaks and repeated spaces collapsed as a result shows them. Width is measured in your browser with 20px Arial for the title and 14px Arial for the description, close to the fonts of a desktop Google result. If your device lacks Arial, a similar font is used, so widths are approximate.

There is no official limit

Google says there is no limit on how long a title element or meta description can be. Long text is shortened to fit the device width, and Google often writes its own title link or snippet from the page content. The pixel figures here are widths commonly observed in results, not a rule.

These are widths commonly measured on Google result pages, not limits Google publishes. Characters vary in width, so the number of characters that fits depends on the text: a line of narrow letters such as i and l fits more than one of wide letters such as W and M.

For advice on writing the description itself, see our meta description length guide.

Write new pages

Draft a title and description together and see whether the important part sits before the point where a result is usually cut off.

Audit existing pages

Paste titles and descriptions from your CMS or a crawl to find ones that are likely to be truncated or that leave most of the space unused.

Check mobile results

Switch the preview to mobile to see how much of a description may show on a narrower screen, and move the key message forward if needed.

Meta title and description FAQ

How long should a meta description be?

Google says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, and shortens snippets as needed to fit the device width. On desktop, result snippets are commonly measured at about 920 px wide, and on mobile about 680 px. Write a description that makes sense even if the end is cut off, with the main point near the start.

How long should a page title be?

Google also sets no limit for title elements, but advises against unnecessarily long or verbose titles. Title links on desktop are commonly cut at about 600 px. A descriptive, concise title that leads with what the page is about is safer than one written to an exact length.

Why measure pixels instead of characters?

Search results are cut by available width, and characters differ in width. Two descriptions with the same character count can end at different points, so a pixel estimate is closer to what is shown than a character count alone.

Will Google show my meta description?

Not always. Google uses the meta description when it thinks it describes the page better than text from the page itself, and otherwise builds a snippet from page content, often matched to the search query. The same applies to title links, which Google may rewrite.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Counting and measuring happen in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.
