How this counts

Every character counts, including spaces and line breaks; a line break is one character here. Accented letters and emoji count as one character each. The counter on the UCAS form has the final word: line breaks and paragraph spacing pasted from Word or Google Docs may be counted differently there, so leave a margin of 20 or 30 characters.

The UCAS personal statement rules

Total for all three answers

4,000

characters, spaces included

Minimum per answer

350

characters in each of the three answers

Most one answer can take

3,300

characters, if the other two sit at the minimum. Worked out, not a UCAS figure.

There is no separate maximum for each question. UCAS says you can split the 4,000 characters across the three answers in any way you choose, as long as each one reaches 350.

The three questions

  1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

These are the questions as UCAS words them. Read UCAS guidance on each before you draft; the question text is not included in the character count.

For how many words that is, and some ways to split the allowance, read our guide to the UCAS personal statement character count.

Plan a budget per answer

Watch the shared total as you draft all three answers, so you can see when one answer is taking room the others need.

Check the minimum

Each answer is flagged until it reaches 350 characters, so a short third answer does not slip through.

Trim before you paste

Spot doubled spaces and blank lines through the line-break count, and cut to a margin under the limit before you paste into the UCAS form.

UCAS personal statement questions

Is the UCAS limit 4,000 words or 4,000 characters?

Characters, with spaces included. UCAS does not set a word limit. This counter shows words as well so you have a sense of length, but only the character total matters to the form.

Do I get 4,000 characters for each question?

No. The 4,000 characters are shared across all three answers, and each answer needs at least 350. That means one answer can use at most 3,300 characters.

Do line breaks and spaces count?

Spaces count. This counter also counts each line break as one character, and shows how many you have. The UCAS form may treat line breaks pasted from a word processor differently, so check the counter on the form and keep a small margin.

Why might my count differ from the UCAS form?

Line endings, curly quotes and stray trailing spaces can be handled differently by different counters, especially when text is pasted from Word or Google Docs. The UCAS form is the one that decides, so leave 20 or 30 characters spare.

Do the questions count towards the 4,000 characters?

No. UCAS's guidance for advisers says the question text is not included in the count. Only what you type in the answer boxes counts.

Is my personal statement saved or sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is not uploaded or stored. Keep your drafts somewhere safe yourself, since closing the tab clears the boxes.
